we took off in the evening on a tuesday i think. and we drove for like an hour and a half. and we hit a guinea fowl. google it. that is a large bird. a large bump. Also, we landed in Darling and to get there we drove through Philadelphia and Atlantis. in just an hour and a half. next VW ad. also we drove past like 20 cars total and fact: 50% of them had one working headlight. i counted. these are real figures. also we drove by a 7-Sevens and that is trying to be 7-Eleven i promise. cute, huh? anyway the place we stayed was this:
okay day 2 the roads turned to mud and i thought it was some kind of joke it was like no roads driving over boulders i thought. this day we saw lots of springboks and other antelopes all over. first wild zebra also. i ate ostrich this day also. ostrich jerky. not too shabby. here is the place we stayed on the second night. compare it to the first night. haha! so good.
day 3 we went on a really neat hike and saw bushman paintings from maybe 8000 years ago, maybe 2 days ago. nothing is for sure here. but i was impressed no matter when it was done:
the road was really straight and there was no one anywhere ever and no mountains. just flat nothing. we stayed at "The White House" that night and it had the highest ceilings eber:
and floors made of Oregon pine, really (here is the proof its from oregon):
the next day (four, cause you are keeping track) we went to the Quiver Tree Forest:
also on the drive from there to Wintoek i think its safe to say we went over 100 bridges that were going over rivers. "Rivers" honest to god not a drop of water. dry dry dry. big dry river basins. bummer.
okay on day 5 it was Louise Adams' birthday! we had big dinner at the peoples house we stayed at and look what happened during breakfast: bum deal.
and this day we went to our final destination which was a guest ranch which was 9000 hectares. and we were the guests. and this was my room:
we ate kudu for dinner. i played pictionary with the sons of some friends or something too complicated for me to understand. then we went rabbit hunting!! most exciting thing so far!! exclamation points!! so basically we got in the back of this guys truck and its totally dark and we are in the middle of nowhere. so really dark. but the truck has headlights so that helps. and then me and those sons you heard about held torches (when they explained the game to me i imagined actual fire torches haha!! but that is just what they call flashlights here) so also try to imagine the game with fire torches and laugh about it with me. so we drive around and look for animal eyes in the wilderness and then we yell and holler about it and then the guy drives the truck really fast all over the place and then we jump out of the truck and chase the animal.. a rabbit type thing (with torches!!! ha!) around as fast as we can until we catch it and then you release it. before i got into the truck they told me no one ever catches anything, so its just people going wild with torches in the dark in the middle of nowhere Namibia. Perfect. did i mention i never got out of the truck haha. brave is not on the resume. but it was so fun and exciting and i really felt important.
ALSO PERFECT: Please appreciate this.

next day we eat oryx for dinner. all the other nights we eat oryx. google that also. amazing right? The other thing i wrote in my journal about this day was that i filed my fingernail so fast that it sliced open my skin. oh man is that the worst version of a paper cut ever. aaagggh dont want to think about it.
hah okay next day we went on a tractor ride and it was so miserable!! and so weird! like it was the worst thing ever. and it was dusty and bumper and painful and nothing good came of it. and then i was with hanna and jakob and we got dropped off and all the workers from the ranch were like uhh this house has to go onto the trailer (that we were sitting on) so we got off and then they lifted this little house up and put it on the trailer and then we were like in the middle of the dust nothingness and wondering whats next. also at first they were speaking some other language and hahaha oh man. it was like wow. where am i. i dont remember how it got resolved but im here to tell the story so i guess it all worked out.
the next day i had cocoa puffs for breakfast. also did i tell you in the room i stayed it had a zebra pelt, cheetah pelt and two springbok pelts. and the Land Cruiser on the farm had 774,000 km on it. impressed. Also on the ranch there was a small chapel and even a cemetary. that is all for that day.
this next day we went to try and find giraffes to no avail. is that how you use that word? what i mean is that we didnt see any giraffes. but i told the kids i could smell some and kaspar told me he could also smell them. oh my gosh we did see warthogs which really are the greatest thing ever and they are so hilarious oh my gosh. best ever. and we saw wildabeasts and oryx and kudu and all the antelopes.
the next day is when i became a non red meat eater. october 3rd. so that is not a month ago but i havent eaten red meat since i heard the gunshot and then saw the guys wrestling the baby cow to the ground. baby cow was sick. margaret was sick. so anyway i like meat but i dont watch the baby cows dying so it was sad for me.
this was the last day on the farm and then we went to the really cool rug making place where there was a package on the floor that was being shipped to Portland, Oregon. so that is kind of crazy because we are in some random rug place in Namibia and im from Portland and the rugs are going to Portland. the ground at the rug plant was really clean.
and it was really neat there. Kandinsky do you see it. dad you like kandinsky.
the rugs were really cool and people can draw a picture and they will make it into a rug for you here. how cool is that. self portrait. send it in. that night we stayed at the Kalahari Lodge and WHO IS THIS???????????? please help me. how amazing. whoever it is its amazing for them to get a spotlight in the clouds.
also check out these cute little bird nests.
and here are some really high quality pictures from other parts i didnt tell you about. but everyone is sooo sick of reading so this is treats for your eyes.

pictures of dogs' faces are always so nice. SO NICE.
Are you really not eating red meat? I think that's really cool; even just cutting down a little is something I admire a lot.
miss you!

Hey Marg,
We sure do miss you here, but it looks like you are having the adventure of a lifetime!! Finding a caterpillar and then a "sock" frog in your shoe is more exciting than anything that's happened here in Portland for quite some time. Enjoy yourself.
Love,
Nancy
