today i was walking around with baby and saw a snake (when i first published this post i spelled snack hahahah. thank god no one saw that) and was like oh thats cool the kids would like to see it and then i walked a little closer, it was like 5 feet away and it flared up. thats when i realized... oh this must be some kind of cobra. so i hightailed it out of there. it was a spitting cobra and a cousin here got spit at-- they aim for the eyes, and hit the target. i guess they wash it out with milk? anyway- you and i both wish i took this photo. its here for dramatic effect. affect? sorry...
also the kids and their aunt performed at the local giant windmill and "what may be the largest thatched roof in south africa with over 20 tons of thatched stuff" -i made that quote up but its close to one that i may have read somewhere. and they made about 100 rand in half an hour-- not bad. hanna and jakob played the recorder and their aunt played accordian. they all wore fancy hats (money makers).
yesterday when we were driving home a monkey ran across the road. not a baboon. a grey monkey with a black face. no one besides me thought it was "so amazing!" also on the drive we saw this guy in a old beat brown peugeot and he was in the fancy uniform with one of those police officer hat and a shirt that looked military-- he looked so official. but apparently a religion here wears these uniforms.
i made this knife:
here is proof i made it:
and here is that solar cooker i was telling you about: tell me that isnt cool. tea, anybody?
and here is a dog with one eye, what a sweetheart.
did i tell you about the eye doctor that came to our little thanksgiving and said he was thankful for blind people?

Margo, years ago...as in before you were born and before the Berlin Wall fell, mom and I were in Berlin for a few days. In those days if you wanted to go see the eastern side of the city (Russian side) you could take a state sponsored tour bus ride across the border. We signed up for the tour and our female East German tour guide kept telling those of us on the bus that if we were hungry when we stopped at the famous park of the fallen solders (military grave yard) we could get off the bus and enjoy some fine traditional Russian style snakes. We have had many laughs over that one for years.
But any way, scary about your spitting cobra snack. Is that really you at the anvil? Who has the forge and what do they do with it? I have always wanted to do some blacksmithing. The knife looks very cool. Another item for your resume.
